Just a note to report on our experience with FPC (Fuel Performance Catalyst). We are a small contractor that operates a fleet of six 5-axel center dump gravel trucks with Ford L 9000 tractors all powered by 3406 Cats. We also operate two 966 Caterpillar Loaders.
Our primary annual project is a contract to gravel a large network of municipal grid roads and we have been awarded the contract for most of the past several years. In addition to monitoring individual truck performance we are able to compare fuel consumption for the entire contract. Each year the job is identical with the same volumes over the same routes and in the case of the last two contracts, the same equipment. The only variable is the effect of excess rain over the network, which will soften the roads and negatively impact fuel consumption. The 2008 contract period recorded considerably more rainfall than the year before and the savings were less than might reasonable have been realized had rainfall conditions been the same.
We first started using FPC just prior to beginning our summer of 2008 contract and we had the opportunity to compare 2007 with 2008.
In spite of the heavier rainfall we found that with FPC, individual trucks were averaging 6% - 7% better fuel mileage and savings over the term of the contract, confirmed those improvements.
In addition to the fuel savings there was a very noticeable reduction in exhaust emissions. Visible smoke reduced by over 50% and oil stayed cleaner longer. We understand that FPC stimulates the combustion of carbon particulates, reduces the build up and sends it out the stack as cleaner exhaust gasses. We are pleased to be doing our small part in reducing pollution and we are optimistic that this will translate into reductions in maintenance costs.
We are sold on FPC and recommend it highly.
